Perfectionism is a good thing! … right? Sorry friends, the truth is that perfectionism isn’t healthy. I dig into why it’s hurting you and share more about how to fix it in this video. Enjoy 😊
You're not wrong -- your anxiety really is worse at night. Here are some key tips that have helped many of my patients (and myself!) feel better and get some worry-free sleep.
(Here’s the NYT article I mentioned in the video)
Is striving always the right answer? Ummm... actually... nope. If you're a perfectionistic high achiever, I think you may prioritize the long term goal too often, and the short term comfort might need to take up more space in your life.
In this video I'm tackling a question I get often -- how can you deal with anxiety when you're anxious about a whole bunch of different things? The answer is that your therapist is considering the process of your anxiety, not the content -- and I think you should too.
If you're a perfectionist, are you obsessed with tracking your life? Steps, sleep, ounces of water, meditation sessions, on and on and on... our phones love to help us keep up with all the data. Interestingly, though, this may not be helping your anxiety. It might actually be actively making it worse 😳
There are SO MANY ways perfectionism is keeping us stuck, and the mindset shift I want to talk about today is the idea of ditching perfect inaction for imperfect action. Tongue twister, I know, but I feel like it really gets to the heart of the matter — are you waiting for the perfect time to act (or reveling in the stuckness because you can’t mess it up)? Or are you here for some imperfect action, my friends? (And did I mix up the two around minute three? Yes, yes I did. Come on they sound so similar 😫)
When you’re trying to fight perfectionism (DO IT GET RID OF IT YOU DONT NEED IT) it can get super hard to figure out all the ways it’s trying to get back in your life. It’s like freaking whack-a-mold out here, people. Right when you think you’re good at not going for the Gold Star 🌟 , the allure of the Perfect Streak ✅ jumps out at you like you’re in a horror movie. Don’t fall for it, girlies.
If you’re a perfectionist, I want to ask you — how’s your decision making feeling lately? Perfectionism really wants you to think it’s helping you to be your BEST self, but most of the time it’s clunky, inflexible, and totally lacks creativity (not to mention it leaves you feeling like roadkill most of the time). Instead of trying to make perfect decisions that leave no stone unturned, in this video I invite you to consider ✨satisficing✨ — a tool that encourages you to embrace the concept that “done is better than perfect.” ✅
We all know how hard it can be to say no even in situations you clearly have ZERO desire to engage in — we’ve been trained since day one to put others first, help when we can, and be a team player. But it can be infinitely more difficult to say no to things you’re great at and everyone is praising you for… but that are truly not in line with what you want for your life. In this video I’m diving in on identifying those tricky moments when you should say no to what everyone wants for you. ❌
High-achieving friends, I know y’all are setting some seriously ambitious goals for yourself. And you should! You are brilliant, you are striving, and you are going places. But are you ~too~ bound to your goals, or are you up for a pivot if you need to be? Today we’re talking about goal setting and the Sunk Cost Fallacy, or why you should build your goals based on where you’re going, not where you’ve been. 💥
When you're a high-performer there aren't many situations where you're encouraged (allowed?!) to be bad at anything, but being total crap at a new skill is required if you want anything new in your life. Perfectionism is keeping you small, my friends. Being brave enough to be bad at something new is KEY to building a life that makes you feel as kick-ass on the inside as your friends think you look on the outside. 💃🏻
Hey friends! Hey y'all! I'm Dr. Rebecca Smith. I'm a clinical psychologist, and I'm on a mission to help high-achieving women get rid of anxiety, imposter syndrome, and perfectionism. I want to help you be the versions of themselves they love best and to build a life that makes them feel as powerful on the inside as their friends think they look on the outside. Do I know what I’m doing with these videos? Not one bit. But I feel like I have a lot to share, so let’s just go with “done is better than perfect” and jump right in, shall we? Thanks for being here ☺️
